MAY 23, 2016: Taupo's Wyatt Chase hopes the hard work he has done to prepare for his latest European adventure will be enough to get the job done.
He flew out at the weekend for his base at Lommel, in Belgium, where he will settle down and put in place the final finishing touches before the start of his European 125cc Championships (EMX125) campaign.
It is a "dip the toes into the waters" campaign for the 16-year-old, who has already missed the first four rounds of the EMX125 series.
His first race will be the fifth round of eight, set for Matterley Basin, near Winchester, in England, on June 19, and he will also race the three rounds that follow in Italy, Belgium and Switzerland.
"I've been riding as much as I can, racing 30-minute sessions to get my cardio up," he explained.
"I've been doing strength work in the gym too and I'm feeling pretty fit.
"I'm not too sure about how fast will be the guys I'll race in England and I think there will be at least 10 or 15 riders all going the same pace at the front.
"If I can do a good job over there I might be able to set myself up for a racing career in Europe. That's the plan anyway. It's going to be a steep learning curve and I'll take as much experience from it as I can.
"I have left school now and so my fingers crossed that this will be a career option for me."
Thanks top massive support from Yamaha-Motor New Zealand, Chase will have a Yamaha YZ125 bike waiting for him on arrival.
Chase's build-up to the European trip could not have gone much better.
He was the most dominant rider at the 2016 Altherm JCR Yamaha-sponsored New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in Hawke's Bay last month.
Racing in two separate classes, Chase won 12 of 14 races over the three days.
He was untouchable in the 15-16 years' 125cc class winning all seven races but, unfortunately, his one no-points race in the 14-16 years' 250cc class proved extremely costly and he was forced to settle for overall runner-up.
If he can avoid mechanical mishap or on-track mayhem, Chase could well be a podium prospect in England on June 19.
Soon after Chase returns to New Zealand in August, he will make his senior debut at the big annual MX Fest in Taupo in October.
Chase is supported by Yamaha-Motor New Zealand, Total Oil, Fox, Dunlop, MX Timing, Backflips, CFX Seats, ODI, Talon, Sevenee Distributors, Pro Taper, Ethika, Exquitize Homes, Nano Energizer, Oxford Pies, Aspiring Health, Team Taupo Scholarship, BikesportNZ.com and Mizuno.
